@KJ All great points KJ! Especially about looking within your major for a job, there are a lot of jobs that don't get advertised publicly because departments look to fill the positions with students from that department. And, these can prove to be some of the most rewarding because you are working with people who have similar educational backgrounds and interests as you.

Another benefit of the campus groups and campus jobs is simple networking.

Campus groups are what people remember from their college experiences. In addition to being fun and gaining experience you have an opportunity to connect with alumni and other members of the campus community when you are looking for summer placement. Whether you join a traditional social organization like a fraternity, a performance group, or an outreach and volunteer organization, you will have the opportunity to reach out to a common group of individuals spread out in the wider world.

On-campus jobs can range from Grocer to department specific positions. Looking for jobs within your major or major interest bring you closer to the people with the skills you want. While we'd all like to be in the good graces of a well respected professor, the staff and administration at your college are knowledgeable and well connected in their own right. So take the opportunity to get a a good look at the positions people hold and their skill-set and make connections. These people traveled some interesting paths to arrive at their careers and are a wealth of knowledge and advice. The recommendations you will receive from the valuable managers, librarians, registrars, and others will help you reach your goals.

Be dedicated and connect!
