Thanks for the reply! I completely agree that traditional marketing is not only stale (at least most of it) and easily passed over (thank you Tivo!), but it is also not very accessible to the independent artist, who is trying to pay for everything with nothing. I feel like indie artists were always about making personal connections but now they can use these tools to maintain and expand that community. I'm writing a post on the power of story in social media, I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Very insightful post - think you nailed it when you said "art is not just about creating something. It is about effectively sharing that something with a larger community."

Using social media is a great way to build your community and establish real connections while sharing your art with an infinite amount of people. If you think about behavior patterns - how (mostly today) we're all programmed to ignore traditional marketing messages these days - but the one thing that always sticks, especially in an over-saturated media driven world is word of mouth. The most powerful recommendation you can get is from someone you know and trust - social media has a tendency to create these shareable, one-to-one experiences that can help shape a powerful community.

It's a very interesting time to be in this space - it's cool to see you taking your first steps.
